I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. Romans 7:21
In the popular movie "Do The Right Thing," director Spike Lee brings to the forefront an ongoing issue in our society: racism. In the movie, the owner of a pizzeria is encouraged to include black people on the wall of fame which currently only housed Italians; the ethnicity of the owner. Therefore, the premise is to get the owner to do the right thing.
In our text the Apostle Paul shares that at times when he has the opportunity to do that which is good, evil is still present with him. I believe some feel that because we are saved, the fight in our minds between good and evil dissolves. This is furthest from the truth. I'm here to tell you, it can be a hard thing to do the right thing at times even when we're saved, but it doesn't mean doing the right thing is not necessary.
I believe once we acknowledge, just as Paul did, that no matter where we may be in our Christian walk, evil will ALWAYS be present. The question remains will we continue to take the bait the enemy lays out for us? We must get to a point where we choose good more so than we choose evil. Some say knowing is half the battle. I believe knowing is all of the battle. When we know, we can make a conscious decision to do better. Let's purpose in our hearts to make a conscious effort to do the right thing!
